The Slingshot and the Lesson of Compassion

Minh has just received a special gift from his best friend – a brand new slingshot. The slingshot is made of ebony, shiny and very sturdy. Minh is extremely excited and eager to try it out right away.

Minh’s garden is bright with flowers, welcoming the birds singing merrily. Minh aims at a sparrow perched on a branch, confidently shooting the first stone. The stone flies away, hits the bird’s wing and makes it fall to the ground, crying miserably.

At first, Minh is overjoyed to have hit the target. He rejoices, thinking it’s a fun game. However, when he sees the little bird struggling in pain, Minh suddenly feels down. The smile fades from his lips, replaced by regret and compassion.

Minh looks at the poor bird, its feathers ruffled, its wing bleeding, its cries weak. He thinks of himself if he were hurt like that. Minh realizes that his action is wrong, that he has caused pain to a small creature.

At this moment, Minh sees his sister, Lan, approaching. Minh lowers his head and sadly tells her about shooting the bird. Lan looks at Minh with gentle eyes and a soft voice:

“Minh, the bird is also a small creature, it feels pain like humans do. You shouldn’t hurt it.”

Minh is silent, thinking about what his sister said. He looks at the bird trying to fly but unable to, his heart filled with compassion. Minh realizes that his action is wrong, that he has caused pain to a small creature.

Minh carefully picks up the bird and puts it back in its nest. He promises himself that he will never hurt any creature again. Minh also decides to share this lesson with his friends to protect the environment and love animals together.

From then on, Minh becomes a boy who knows how to love and cherish all the creatures around him. He regularly helps those in need, takes care of animals and plants. Minh realizes that when people know how to love, life becomes better and more meaningful.
